Not every parent is supportive.

She doesn’t notice how I finally have come into terms with who I am and what I want. She doesn’t notice that I have found the capacity to love another. She doesn’t notice the courage I have to leave myself vulnerable to the judgment of others. She doesn’t notice the years I’ve been living a lie just to please and appease others. She doesn’t notice that I have not taken for granted the opportunities that have been placed in front of me. She doesn’t notice that I am the first child of four to have the drive to go to university to get a Bachelors and later on a Masters. She doesn’t notice that I’m not one of those kids that fall into the pits of drug/alcohol addiction, crime, DUIs, unwanted pregnancies, or other delinquent-related activities.

She only notices me holding another boy’s hand, and that’s enough to make her disappointed in me, despite everything. I love my mom, but …

“‘So what do you do now?’

‘I moved here to take a job as regional manager. There were a couple of locations that had openings, but I chose here because it’s close to headquarters and that means more opportunities for career advancement.’ She leaned forward and gazed at him. ‘Don’t you remember me telling you that? And how excited I was?’

His chest compressed. He remembered her bubbling about her new job and the new town she’d be moving to, but the details of her job had blurred at the emotional punch to his gut.

‘I remember how excited you were, but all I heard was that you were leaving.’”
